Understanding the 36-Point Gun Milan System
Kundli Matching (also called Gun Milan, Horoscope Matching, or Guna Milap) is a Vedic astrology practice used to assess marriage compatibility. It analyzes eight aspects (Ashta Koota) of both partners' birth charts, primarily based on the Moon's position at birth.
The 8 Kootas Explained
1. Varna (1 point)
Measures spiritual and ego compatibility. Based on the caste classification of Moon signs: Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra. The groom's Varna should be equal or higher.
2. Vashya (2 points)
Assesses mutual attraction and dominance. Signs are grouped into Chatushpad (quadruped), Dwipada (biped), and Jalachara (aquatic). Same group scores highest.
3. Tara (3 points)
Evaluates health and well-being compatibility. Calculated by counting Nakshatras between partners. Auspicious Taras (2, 4, 6, 8, 9) score full points.
4. Yoni (4 points)
Measures sexual and biological compatibility. Each Nakshatra is assigned an animal symbol. Same animal = 4 points, enemy animals = 0.
5. Graha Maitri (5 points)
Tests mental and intellectual compatibility. Based on the friendship between the lords of both Moon signs. Mutual friends score 5, mutual enemies score 0.
6. Gana (6 points)
Assesses temperament compatibility. Three Ganas: Deva (divine), Manushya (human), Rakshasa (demon). Same Gana = 6, Deva-Rakshasa = 0.
7. Bhakoot (7 points)
Predicts financial prosperity and family harmony. Based on the relative position of Moon signs. Dangerous positions (2-12, 5-9, 6-8) score 0.
8. Nadi (8 points)
The most important Koota โ tests genetic and health compatibility. Same Nadi (Adi, Madhya, or Antya) = 0 points (Nadi Dosha). Different = 8 points.

Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is this Kundli Matching tool?โผ
Our tool uses the same Ashta Koota (8-fold) system described in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. We calculate Moon sign and Nakshatra from precise Swiss Ephemeris planetary positions โ the same data professional astrologers use. The 36-point Gun Milan score is computed algorithmically with no shortcuts.
Do I need exact birth time for Kundli Matching?โผ
Yes, accurate birth time is important because it determines your Moon's exact position, which decides your Nakshatra. Even a 15-minute difference can change your Nakshatra and affect the matching score. If you don't know exact time, use the time on your birth certificate.
What is a good Gun Milan score for marriage?โผ
A score of 18+ out of 36 is considered acceptable. 24+ is good, and 28+ is excellent. However, individual Koota scores matter too โ a high total with 0 in Nadi (health compatibility) still needs attention. We recommend consulting an astrologer if Nadi or Bhakoot score is 0.
What is Mangal Dosha and does it matter?โผ
Mangal Dosha (Manglik) occurs when Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the Ascendant. It's believed to cause friction in marriage. However, many cancellation rules exist โ Mars in own sign, exaltation, or both partners having dosha cancels it out. Our tool checks all cancellation conditions.
Is this free? Are there hidden charges?โผ
Completely free. No registration, no email required, no limits on how many matches you check. We offer optional paid detailed reports if you want a 30+ page PDF analysis, but the Gun Milan calculator is free forever.
Can I use this for same-sex couples?โผ
The traditional Ashta Koota system was designed for male-female pairings based on Vedic texts. The astronomical calculations work for any two birth charts, but the traditional interpretations (like Varna hierarchy) assume a groom-bride dynamic. Use the results as one data point among many.

The Complete Science of Kundli Matching for Marriage
Kundli matching (also called Kundali Milan, Gun Milan, or Horoscope Matching) is the Vedic astrology system for assessing marriage compatibility between two people. The system evaluates 8 categories (Ashta Koota) of compatibility, awarding up to 36 total points. A score of 18+ is considered acceptable for marriage, 24+ is good, and 30+ indicates excellent compatibility. However, the numerical score alone doesn't determine marriage success โ the system must be combined with Mangal Dosha analysis, Nadi Dosha check, and broader chart compatibility for a complete picture.
The system is based entirely on the Moon sign (Rashi) and Nakshatra of both individuals. Since the Moon governs the mind, emotions, and daily temperament in Vedic astrology, matching Moon positions reveals how two people will feel living together day-to-day โ their emotional rhythms, communication styles, physical compatibility, and long-term growth potential as a couple.
The 8 Kootas (Matching Categories) Explained
1. Varna (1 point): Spiritual compatibility โ measures ego and temperament alignment. Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra classifications based on Moon sign. 2. Vashya (2 points): Mutual attraction and influence โ determines who naturally dominates and whether both can accommodate each other. 3. Tara (3 points): Birth star compatibility โ calculates auspiciousness based on the Nakshatra distance between partners, affecting health and longevity of the relationship.
4. Yoni (4 points): Physical and sexual compatibility โ each Nakshatra is assigned an animal symbol representing intimate nature. Same-animal pairs score highest. 5. Graha Maitri (5 points): Intellectual and friendship compatibility โ based on planetary lords of both Moon signs. Friendly planets indicate natural mental rapport. 6. Gana (6 points): Temperament matching โ Deva (divine/gentle), Manushya (human/balanced), Rakshasa (aggressive/intense). Same-Gana scores highest.
7. Bhakoot (7 points): Emotional and financial compatibility โ the most weighted koota. Based on the distance between Moon signs. Some combinations (6-8, 9-5, 12-2) create "Bhakoot Dosha" affecting prosperity and emotional harmony. 8. Nadi (8 points): Genetic and health compatibility โ the highest-weighted koota. Same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya, or Antya) scores 0 and is considered the most serious dosha, traditionally linked to genetic compatibility and progeny health.
Mangal Dosha in Marriage Matching
Mangal Dosha (Mars affliction) is separately checked during Kundli matching. If one partner has Mangal Dosha and the other doesn't, traditional practice considers this a significant incompatibility. However, the dosha is cancelled if: both partners are Manglik (mutual cancellation), Mars is in its own sign or exaltation, Jupiter aspects Mars, Mars is in specific Nakshatras (Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta), or the person is past a certain age (traditionally 28+ for females, 32+ for males). Our calculator automatically checks all cancellation conditions.
When Low Scores Don't Mean Bad Marriage
A common misconception is that low Gun Milan scores guarantee marriage failure. In reality, many successful marriages have scores below 18 โ because the Ashta Koota system evaluates only Moon-based factors. If both charts show strong Venus (love indicator), 7th house lord well-placed (partnership house), and compatible Dasha periods during marriage years, the marriage can succeed despite a low Gun Milan score. Conversely, a 32/36 score doesn't prevent divorce if other chart factors like Venus affliction or 7th lord combustion indicate relationship challenges.
Beyond Numbers: What Professional Astrologers Check
Experienced marriage astrologers look beyond Gun Milan scores at: 7th house lords of both charts and their mutual relationship; Venus placement and condition in both charts; Saturn's role (delays or longevity of marriage); matching of Dasha periods (both should be in favorable Dashas during early marriage years); and the Navamsha chart (D9, the marriage-specific divisional chart). Our tool provides the Ashta Koota score as a starting point, but these deeper factors determine actual marital happiness.
How This Calculator Works
Enter the birth details (date, time, place) of both the bride and groom. The calculator automatically determines each person's Moon sign and Nakshatra using Swiss Ephemeris precision โ you don't need to know these in advance. It then computes all 8 Koota scores, checks Mangal Dosha with full cancellation analysis, evaluates Nadi Dosha, and provides an overall compatibility verdict with detailed explanations for each matching category. Results include a downloadable PDF report suitable for sharing with family members.
