Kundli matching (also called Kundali Milan, Gun Milan, or Horoscope Matching) is the Vedic astrology system for assessing marriage compatibility between two people. The system evaluates 8 categories (Ashta Koota) of compatibility, awarding up to 36 total points. A score of 18+ is considered acceptable for marriage, 24+ is good, and 30+ indicates excellent compatibility. However, the numerical score alone doesn't determine marriage success — the system must be combined with Mangal Dosha analysis, Nadi Dosha check, and broader chart compatibility for a complete picture.

The system is based entirely on the Moon sign (Rashi) and Nakshatra of both individuals. Since the Moon governs the mind, emotions, and daily temperament in Vedic astrology, matching Moon positions reveals how two people will feel living together day-to-day — their emotional rhythms, communication styles, physical compatibility, and long-term growth potential as a couple.

The 8 Kootas (Matching Categories) Explained

1. Varna (1 point): Spiritual compatibility — measures ego and temperament alignment. Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra classifications based on Moon sign. 2. Vashya (2 points): Mutual attraction and influence — determines who naturally dominates and whether both can accommodate each other. 3. Tara (3 points): Birth star compatibility — calculates auspiciousness based on the Nakshatra distance between partners, affecting health and longevity of the relationship.

4. Yoni (4 points): Physical and sexual compatibility — each Nakshatra is assigned an animal symbol representing intimate nature. Same-animal pairs score highest. 5. Graha Maitri (5 points): Intellectual and friendship compatibility — based on planetary lords of both Moon signs. Friendly planets indicate natural mental rapport. 6. Gana (6 points): Temperament matching — Deva (divine/gentle), Manushya (human/balanced), Rakshasa (aggressive/intense). Same-Gana scores highest.

7. Bhakoot (7 points): Emotional and financial compatibility — the most weighted koota. Based on the distance between Moon signs. Some combinations (6-8, 9-5, 12-2) create "Bhakoot Dosha" affecting prosperity and emotional harmony. 8. Nadi (8 points): Genetic and health compatibility — the highest-weighted koota. Same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya, or Antya) scores 0 and is considered the most serious dosha, traditionally linked to genetic compatibility and progeny health.

Mangal Dosha in Marriage Matching

Mangal Dosha (Mars affliction) is separately checked during Kundli matching. If one partner has Mangal Dosha and the other doesn't, traditional practice considers this a significant incompatibility. However, the dosha is cancelled if: both partners are Manglik (mutual cancellation), Mars is in its own sign or exaltation, Jupiter aspects Mars, Mars is in specific Nakshatras (Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta), or the person is past a certain age (traditionally 28+ for females, 32+ for males). When Low Scores Don't Mean Bad Marriage

A common misconception is that low Gun Milan scores guarantee marriage failure. In reality, many successful marriages have scores below 18 — because the Ashta Koota system evaluates only Moon-based factors. If both charts show strong Venus (love indicator), 7th house lord well-placed (partnership house), and compatible Dasha periods during marriage years, the marriage can succeed despite a low Gun Milan score. Conversely, a 32/36 score doesn't prevent divorce if other chart factors like Venus affliction or 7th lord combustion indicate relationship challenges.
