Planetary Transits (Gochar): Real-Time Celestial Movements & Their Effects
Planetary transits (called Gochar in Vedic astrology) are the real-time movements of planets through the zodiac as observed from Earth. While your birth chart is a fixed snapshot of the sky at your birth moment, transiting planets continue moving โ and as they form aspects to your natal positions, they activate different life themes. Saturn transiting your 7th house triggers relationship restructuring. Jupiter crossing your 10th house brings career expansion. Rahu entering your Moon sign creates emotional intensity and obsessive patterns. Understanding current transits is the key to predicting when things happen in your life.
Each planet moves at a different speed, creating layers of influence: the Moon transits a sign every 2.5 days (daily mood shifts), Mercury and Venus every 3-4 weeks (communication and relationship themes), the Sun monthly (identity and vitality cycles), Mars every 6-8 weeks (energy and conflict patterns), Jupiter annually (expansion and opportunity windows), Saturn every 2.5 years (major life restructuring), and Rahu-Ketu every 18 months (karmic direction shifts). Our transit calculator shows all current planetary positions and their specific effects on your Moon sign.
How Transits Are Read in Vedic Astrology
In Jyotish, transits are read primarily from your Moon sign (not Sun sign or Ascendant). Each planet transiting through a specific house from your Moon creates predictable effects: Jupiter in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, or 11th house from Moon is favorable. Saturn in the 3rd, 6th, or 11th from Moon gives good results. Mars in the 3rd, 6th, or 11th is beneficial. The remaining houses create challenges or mixed results for each planet. This house-from-Moon system (called Gochar Phal) is the backbone of transit prediction in Vedic astrology.
Major Slow-Planet Transits and Their Life Impact
Saturn transit (2.5 years per sign): The most impactful transit โ restructures whichever house it occupies from your Moon. Creates delays, discipline, and lasting results in that life area. Jupiter transit (1 year per sign): Brings expansion, opportunity, and protection to the house it occupies. The best year for that life area in a 12-year cycle. Rahu-Ketu transit (18 months): Rahu amplifies desires and creates obsession in its house. Ketu detaches and spiritualizes its house. Their axis shift reshapes your karmic direction for 18 months.
Vedhashtaka: When Good Transits Get Blocked
An important concept often overlooked is Vedha (obstruction) โ when a planet transiting a favorable house gets its positive effects blocked by another planet transiting a specific "vedha point." For example, Jupiter transiting the 2nd from Moon (favorable for wealth) gets blocked if any planet simultaneously transits the 12th (vedha point for 2nd house Jupiter). This explains why sometimes a theoretically favorable transit doesn't deliver expected results โ vedha from another planet is neutralizing it. Our calculator checks for active vedha conditions.
Combining Transits with Dasha for Precise Timing
The most accurate predictions come from combining transit analysis with Vimshottari Dasha periods. A favorable Jupiter transit produces maximum results when Jupiter's Dasha or Antardasha is also running. A challenging Saturn transit is most intense during Saturn's own Dasha period. When transit and Dasha agree (both pointing to the same theme โ career, relationship, health), events manifest with certainty. When they contradict, results are mixed or delayed. Professional astrologers always check both systems together for timing predictions.
How This Transit Calculator Works
Enter your birth details and the tool calculates your Moon sign, then maps all current planetary positions relative to your Moon. You receive: each planet's current sign and house from your Moon, whether it's in a favorable or challenging house, specific predictions for each transiting planet, any active vedha (obstruction) conditions, upcoming major transit changes (sign entries) with dates, and an overall transit score indicating whether the current period is generally favorable or challenging for you.
